Wedding Rings: The Dos and Don’ts of Wedding Ring Shopping

Embarking on the journey of selecting wedding rings is a momentous occasion that requires careful consideration and planning. The process involves various decisions, from when to purchase to the choice of metal and design. In this guide, we will explore the dos and don'ts of wedding ring shopping, providing valuable insights from SETTE, a jewelry brand dedicated to creating the perfect rings for your special day.

When should I buy my wedding ring?

Wedding rings should be ordered roughly 3 months prior to the wedding. This gives you enough time to resize the band if there are any fit issues. At SETTE, we will map the wedding ring to fit perfectly flush with your engagement ring. Design of the band will take about a week and then crafting the wedding ring will be about 3 - 4 weeks.

We are firm believers in not buying your wedding ring at the same time as your engagement ring. Often, customers think that they want one type of ring, but then after a while of wearing their engagement ring, they change their mind on the style. At SETTE, we strive for conscious consumerism so we want to make your perfect wedding ring the first time!

Are wedding bands supposed to match for the spouses?

Matching your spouse is your preference and to the extent of the matching wedding rings is as well! They can be essentially the same, or just the same metal color. It is also very common for them not to match.

At SETTE, we can engrave almost anything into your wedding ring (as space allows). Our favorite engraving? We love a roman numeral engraving of your wedding date! Just let us know when placing your order; simply email us at customer@settejewelry.com with your name and order number.

Are wedding bands supposed to match the engagement ring?

Mixing and matching is in for 2024! Throw out the playbook - wedding rings do not need to match the engagement ring. Although, it is important to make sure that the wedding ring sits flush with the engagement ring. For that reason, if you did not buy your engagement ring at SETTE, we may ask you to send us your ring so we can do a digital 3D scan to map your wedding ring perfectly.

Are Wedding Rings supposed to be a surprise?

Long ago were the days with engagement rings and wedding rings were a surprise. At SETTE, we believe in getting what you want, which often means your partner should be involved in the shopping process. It is also important not to simply guess your partner’s wedding ring size as eternity rings cannot be resized and will have to be completely remade if it does not fit.

Can wedding rings be resized?

It depends on the style. Eternity wedding rings cannot be resized as the diamonds go all the way around and cutting into the band will cause tension to be lost. This would result in a serious risk of loosing stones. At SETTE, we offer one size replacement for your wedding ring.

Wedding rings that have a sizing bar on the bottom can be resized up to ¾ of a size. Any larger size difference up or down will require a full remake.

For large men’s bands over 3mm wide, we recommend doing a full remake as resizing will show a seam that is not attractive. The intricacies of re-sizing is why we offer free ring sizer. For men’s sizes we recommend going up ½ a size from what the ring sizer states. Thicker rings tend to fit a little tighter.

What metal should my wedding ring be?

Your wedding ring will become part of your daily look. Imagine the wear and tear that ring will undergo! For that reason, we recommend either Platinum or 18K for your wedding ring. Silver or Gold plated rings will not stand the test of time and will most likely need to be replaced after a year or two.

Where do I wear my wedding ring?

Traditionally, wedding rings are worn on the left hand in the US. There is an old saying that the wedding ring goes before your engagement ring, because it is closest to your heart. However, we believe that it is your stack - wear it how you want!

Who should buy the wedding rings?

We find it is most common with our customers that the wedding rings are bought from one spouse to the other as a gift. However, there is no right or wrong way to get your wedding rings, just make sure you have the conversation before!

Should I buy an eternity wedding ring?

We love an eternity ring. However, the initial love affair with their wedding ring wears off, many customers find that the eternity ring is not as everyday friendly as they want. We can do a sizing bar on the bottom to make sure the wedding ring can withstand daily use. Or, if you are looking for a larger stone ring, we can do 5, 7, or 9 stone rings so you get a big impact on top, but a comfortable bottom shank.

Can I have multiple wedding rings?

ABSOLUTELY! One of our most popular gifting items are wedding rings. Many customers buy them as anniversary gifts or even push presents to represent a new monument in the couple’s journey.
